iPhone Personal Hotspot Slow? How to Test and Fix It
Your iPhone shows full bars and browses fine, but tether your laptop to Personal Hotspot and everything crawls. That gap between "my phone's internet is fine" and "my hotspot is slow" is a real, testable difference, not just a feeling.
First: Isolate Which Connection Is Actually Slow
Run Speed Test directly on the iPhone providing the hotspot. Then run it on the device connected to the hotspot. If the phone's own number is fast but the connected device is slow, the bottleneck is the hotspot link itself - not your cellular signal. That distinction changes what's worth trying next.
The Most Common Causes
- Connection method - Bluetooth hotspot connections have a much lower bandwidth ceiling than WiFi, and WiFi hotspot itself is still slower than a direct USB connection. If you have a cable, USB tethering is generally the fastest option.
- Carrier hotspot throttling - many plans allocate a separate, often smaller, high-speed data allowance specifically for hotspot use. Once that's used up, hotspot traffic can get deprioritized or throttled even while your phone's own browsing keeps working normally. Check your specific plan's hotspot allowance.
- Weak cellular signal - if the phone's own Speed Test result is also slow, the issue is upstream of the hotspot entirely; see our general troubleshooting order for isolating that.
- Distance and interference - a WiFi hotspot connection degrades with distance and walls just like any WiFi signal. Moving the connected device closer to the phone is a simple first test.
Quick test: switch the hotspot connection method (WiFi to USB, or Bluetooth to WiFi) and re-run Speed Test on the connected device. If speed changes significantly, the connection method itself was the bottleneck, not your carrier or signal.
What to Try, in Order
- Switch to USB tethering if a cable is available - it rules out WiFi and Bluetooth entirely.
- Move the connected device closer to the iPhone if using WiFi hotspot.
- Check your carrier plan's specific hotspot data allowance - you may have crossed a throttling threshold this billing cycle.
- Confirm the phone's own cellular speed with Speed Test - if that's also slow, the problem is signal, not the hotspot feature.
- Restart the hotspot connection (toggle it off and on) - a stuck connection state is a real, if unglamorous, occasional cause.
