Before You Go Live
- Run a Speed Test and check your upload number specifically, not download. If it's close to your streaming bitrate rather than comfortably above it, you have no margin for anyone else on the network.
- Check for bufferbloat. This is the single most common cause of dropped frames that isn't your ISP's fault: when your upload saturates, latency and jitter spike for everything sharing that connection, including your stream. Enabling QoS/SQM on a router that supports it is usually the fix, not a faster plan.
- Use ethernet for the streaming device if you can. WiFi jitter that's invisible for browsing is often exactly what shows up as stutter to viewers. If ethernet isn't an option, check signal quality with WiFi Analyzer first.
What PingKit doesn't do: it doesn't see inside OBS, your encoder, or your streaming platform's ingest servers - a dropped-frames counter in OBS can also mean a CPU/GPU bottleneck or an ingest-side issue with no network cause at all.
