How to Diagnose Dorm & Campus WiFi Problems

Dorm WiFi is a fundamentally different animal from home WiFi. It's hundreds of devices on a handful of access points, managed by infrastructure you'll never log into, and "just restart the router" isn't an option available to you. When it's slow or dropping, the fastest path to actually fixing it (or at least getting a real answer from Res-Net) is knowing which of three things is actually broken: your device, your room's signal, or the network itself.

Step 1: Rule Out Your Own Device First

Before blaming the network, confirm the problem isn't local. A slow DNS step with a fast gateway ping points somewhere completely different than a slow gateway ping across the board, and knowing which is which saves you from restarting your laptop three times for nothing.

Step 3: Test at Different Times of Day

If your connection is fine at 10am and crawling at 9pm, that's not a broken network, it's a saturated one. Run Speed Test at a few different points across a day or two and compare. A consistent evening dip that lines up with everyone being back in their rooms streaming and gaming is peak-hour congestion, a capacity problem campus IT can plan around but can't instantly fix, and knowing it's that specific pattern (rather than "sometimes bad") changes what you should expect them to do about it.

Step 4: See What's Sharing Your Connection
